Almost everyone by now has tried or is using a meal replacement shake. Perhaps you bought it at a local store or you have a friend who is in a network marketing-MLM company and told you about one. Diet shakes are not new.
I first started using diet shakes in 1974 before they became mainstream and in fact, I didn’t even know they existed. I was doing a lot of heavy weight training and competing in powerlifting competitions. I needed a way to lose weight and drop to the next lighter weight class without losing too much strength. I WASN’T having much luck. With the weight loss, came a lot of strength loss.
Since I had been using high protein powders as a supplement, I thought why not use it as a meal replacement? I tried it and it worked incredibly well. I dropped weight rapidly but did not lose much if any strength. I was hooked.
Enter Irvin Johnson
It was the 1950s and a man by the name of Irvin Johnson, a nutritionist from Chicago, IL began counseling weightlifters and bodybuilders offering a then new product called “Protein Powder” Results were incredible. This was the pre steriod era and athletes began getting results heretofore unattainable and in record time.
Johnson began advertising his products in weightlifting magazines Iron Man and Strength & Health.
Several years later, Johnson moved to sunny Southern California and changed his name to Rheo H. Blair. Also, rather than limit his products and knowledge just to weightlifters and bodybuilders, Blair expanded by working with celebrities, actors, actresses and models who needed to shape up quickly but didn’t have the time or desire to sweat in the gym. AND insasmuch as this was the 1950s, there were not that many gyms around. The fitness craze had not started yet.
WHEREAS Blairs initial protein product was soy based, the new formula was derived from milk and eggs. It was the first high quality protein supplement and wow did it ever work.
Some of the stars that Blair worked with initially included Charleton Heston, Debby Reynolds, Kirk Douglas, Bob Cummings and then in the 1960s, Racquel Welch, Bruce Lee and more. The program was called “The Secret Diet of the Stars” and it whipped them into fantastic shape in record time.

As noted above, Blair was a nutritionist and as such was uniquely qualified to understanding the needs of the individual wanting to shape up. He knew it was more than just reducing calories. The cornerstone of Blairs program was his one of a kind BioEngineered Protein Powder
Blair suggested mixing his powder with milk and in many cases half and half, milk with heavy cream and eat several servings throughout the day. results were amazing. Not only did the stars shape up, they had a burst of energy and a healthy glow to their skin. A definite asset to people who would be seen by millions.
Another secret that Blair used was recommending lecithin and Choline & Inositol, lipotropic agents that emulsified fat. When combined with the protein powder, users would lose inches, firm up and not have any loose or hanging skin. They were toned up. Even without exercise, they looked like they had been undergoing intense physical exercise.
Because of the high price of these quality products and BlAIRS consulting fees, these products were out of the reach of the general public at that time. The fact is, that only “stars” knew about this program and could afford them.
In reading the bodybuilding magazines, I learned of Blair but initially was only aware of his work with bodybuilders. I did not know until much later that Blair worked with Hollywood stars and models and used it as a weight loss program.
So I used the higher quality protein powders in my quest to drop weight for powerlifting events. I also added the other supplements. The results were astounding. My weight dropped from 191 lbs to 165 lbs in 2 weeks. In my first competition in the new, lighter weight class, I broke 2 state records and was ranked 3rd in the world in my weight class. Was particularly interesting was that I had lost so little strength. Actually none at all. Lifted only slightly less than I did in a meet 2 weeks earlier in the heavier weight class.
ENTER SLENDER NOW 1975
I lived in Pennsylvania. Meanwhile a gentleman in Jacksonville, FL who owned a chain of health spas in the Florida region, started working with a weight loss product called Slender Now. It was in so many ways similar to the Blair program from the 1950s, except used cheaper ingredients and was more affordable. It became the first diet shake program to be mass marketed to the general public via network marketing.
The program was an immediate hit. Like the Blair program, people rapidly lost weight and inches and shaped up even without exercise. They also experienced amazing wellness benefits. Over the next three years, Slender Now would attract over 300,000 clients and generate over $100 million in revenue. When you add in the Slender Now copycats, industry wide, sales were over $300 million.
A new industry had been created. Today, the diet shake industry alone is estimated to be a $10 Billion + industry. Herbalife, the #1 in market share for diet shakes, has generated as much as $7.8 billion in revenue.
Other Diet Shakes and programs fall far short
Many people had issues with the other shakes because of lactose intolerance–milk allergies. The other shakes then and even now are pretty chalky tasting, except for the cheap ones which are primarily sugar and low in nutrition. When a product tastes good, people are more apt to use it everyday and keep using it to maintain weight loss. But how do you find a shake that tastes good and is good for you?
Another issue at that time and even today was/is that most shakes use cheap ingredients, use a lot of sugar to make them taste good. They may use whey protein but dilute it with other sources of protein which are not that good. Or they may have a shake that is high carb/high fiber and not does not provide adequate protein or it may be high protein and too low in carbs.. Then regular elimination becomes a issue. Or even if it contains protein, may not have all of the amino acids in the right balance and may not be complete.
Why is that important? Imagine for those of you who cook. Someone gives you a recipe to cook or bake something. But you leave out some of the ingredients. Will it be the same? Of course not. And in the nutrition world. If all of the amino acids are not present in the proper ratio, likewise, the results will not be the same. And this is why people who have used other shakes have not received the results they were looking for. Or lost weight and have sagging skin.
